Message I think this problem (SVN context menu is missing when one right click on a versioned file in window explorer) may be caused by the permission setting in registry.

I start seeing the context menu on the versioned files again when I do the following things:

1. Go to registry editor using regedit
2. Go to and click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/*/shellex/ContextMenuHandlers/TortoiseSVN
3. Observe error message box saying access is denied.
4. Right click on the key mentioned above, go to "Permissions"...
5. In the permission dialog, click on "Advanced"
6. Click on "Owner" tab, click on your account and click "Apply"
7. OK the dialog, click on "Add..."
8. Enter your account name in the text area and click "OK"
9. OK the permission dialog.

Now when you click on the key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/*/shellex/ContextMenuHandlers/TortoiseSVN" you should see NO error message box and should see the data string on (Default).

And now the problem (SVN context menu is missing when one right click on a versioned file in window explorer) should be fixed.

It certainly works on my machine anyway... Hopefully your machine behave the same...

It is a 3 month old thread, but it was never resolved.

There have been other (rare) instances also unresolved:

Not too clear on what problem you're talking about, other than it has to do with context menus, but 1.7.4 x64 on Windows 7 x64 works fine for me. I haven't noticed any problems relating to context menus.

Message I am not sure why you are making things
so difficult for the questioner?

I installed 1.7.4 x64 on windows 7 x64 a few days ago, rebooted,
and got exactly the same problem.

Right-click on folder: svn context menus
Right-click on file: NO context menu.

Did a repair install and reboot. Same problem.

Uninstalled 1.7.4 and installed 1.7.3. Rebooted.
NOW have SAME problem as above.
Did a repair install on 1.7.3, rebooted. still same problem,
so installing 1.7.4 has broken something in Windows 7.

In desperation did a system restore to just before the upgrade.
1.7.3 comes back and all is well!

So, there is something wrong with version 1.7.4:
it is not caused by end users...

Also been using tortoise svn for years without any problems.

I can confirm that I'm seeing the same behaviour as this -- navigating into a working copy from the root works, opening directly into a subfolder within the working copy does not.

Message Hey Guys,

I think I have the same or a very similar problem and I hope this helps clarifying it a bit more. This is what I did:

1. installed tsvn 1.7 (64 bit) over 1.6 (64 bit)
2. upgraded my old working copy to the new format
3. restart

Then I noticed that the extended context menus (commit, add, update etc) were missing from both the files AND folders. Icon overlays are shown perfectly though.
However, in my root directory the context menu works fine on both files and folders.

4. did a cleanup
5. repair-installed 1.7
6. restart

Still the same as after 3.
After tinkering around a bit more I noticed that when I first open the root directory and then go to a subfolder from there, the context menu works there on folders and files also!

So in short:
-> root: works
-> root -> subfolder: works
-> subfolder: doesn't work
-> subfolder -> ..up.. -> root -> ..down.. -> subfolder: works

So accessing files/folders starting from the root folder makes the context menu work everywhere in the working copy. Directly going into a subfolder makes it not work.

I think this has to do with the new svn-folder structure, as the .svn folder is in the root only and accessing the root first makes the menu work.

Hope that helps ;)

You are right. I checked out w/o converting. Before I did that I tried converting an existing check out, hence my confusion.

Did you reboot after installing 1.7?

That is what I asked before and you still haven't answered. If you
make a fresh checkout into an empty directory, there is no way to
convert to the new format. It already is in 1.7 format after a fresh
checkout so the upgrade option should not be there. If it is then
something else is wrong.

Because you now have a working copy in 1.7 format, which cannot be used by
1.6 clients. You need a fresh checkout.

You see the TSVN menu items on your directories, right? Invoke
check-for-modifications from there.

If that doesn't work, read up on "automating TortoiseSVN" and type the
appropriate command line(s). Not particularly convenient, I'll grant,
but it should work.
